A Play Map of Winchester

Joel Seath

Abstract

This observation study set out to ascertain how and where play manifested in Winchester, Hampshire over a seven week period in early 2018. Locales of apparent play significance were plotted and a stylised map was devised. Play could be seen to occur in a multitude of geographic conditions that are not necessarily places designated for play. This study is a continued advocacy for acknowledging children’s play as vital to their rights as citizens, co-dwellers of the city, but also concludes with the suggestion that urban designers and planners give due consideration to children’s perception and use of the city in ways that aren’t merely confined to the traditionally designated places for play
