A map of missing voices: Graeme Miller on Linked

Debbie Kent

Abstract

An interview with artist Graeme Miller about the map which forms part of his 2003 sound installation Linked, a trail of soundscapes along the route of the M11 link road in East London. The building of the road in 1999 entailed the demolition of 400 homes in the face of a vocal and angry protest campaign organised by residents, and the work transmits the lost voices of people from the communities ripped apart by the road via a series of radio transmitters. Miller talks about the thinking behind the map, and how it reflects the loss and decay that lies at the heart of his project.
