PhD Candidate, Goldsmiths, University of London.
Sam Nightingale is an artist and researcher who investigates notions of the spectral, bringing obscured histories, dark ecologies and misaligned landscapes into constellation.
His work takes the visible and invisible elements relating to a site’s history, present and imagined futures and enfolds them into the image-making process: from the urban environment to remote desert and arctic landscapes. Engaging with ideas from media archaeology - often working with practices and histories from early cinema and photography - Nightingale responds to these sites as ‘spectral ecologies’. He draws as much on 'man-made' media technologies as he does on the environment’s own capacity as elemental media in order to produce an aesthetics of human/non-human entanglement.
Nightingale works across the fields of photography, film and experimental media and draws transversally on concepts and methodologies from contemporary art, philosophy, media archaeology, and experimental geographies. www.samnightingale.com
